Films often tell stories that draw us in, where we can identify with the people we see onscreen. Queer storytelling in film is a way to combat invisibility in society and proof that we exist.
Historically, very often the themes were the same; hidden or forbidden love, or guilt and shame – queers were portrayed in a one dimensional way. Still, it opened a door into a world we could relate to and see ourselves in. It was important to share stories many worked to undermine, and it’s great to see that the trend in storytelling has changed.
The perception of what being queer is, is no longer just one story, today there are as many stories as there are individuals; Diversity in sexuality, gender identity and gender expressions are more visible in society, and the stories doesn’t have to fit the same mold.
The medium of film has the power to change lives, so when you leave the theater and go back to reality, make sure you take some of the queer movie magic into your life - and keep it with you. In the real world, you are the director of your own life!
