For years, Iris Apfel has been a true fashion icon and at 94 she’s still easily recognizeable with her large, often red, round glasses, an impressive amount of jewelry and a fantastical wardrobe. Apfel has greatly influenced the New York fashion scene for decades, and her vast collection of jewelry and creations have been exhibited in museums around the world.
”Iris” brings together Apfel and Albert Maysles, the late pioneer documentary filmmaker. It is a portrait of woman who, in spite of the present abundance of glamour in her life, continues to embrace the values of her adolescence during the Great Depression.
Our society’s obsession with conventional beauty is nothing new, and Loehmann’s Department Store founder Frieda Loehmann’s following words to Apfel may be harsh, but also compliments her as a fashion rebel and trailblazer: ”You’re not pretty, and you’ll never be pretty, but it doesn’t matter. You have something much better. You have style.”
